GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 9, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team fell behind as the No. 7 nationally ranked Adelphi Panthers poured in nine goals in the third quarter on Saturday afternoon. Later, the Ravens fourth-quarter comeback attempt failed, as the Ravens fell on the road, 19-11 in a Northeast-10 matchup at Motamed Field.
With the loss, the Ravens record falls to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in conference, while Adelphi advances to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the Northeast-10.
Franklin Pierce scored the first two goals of the game. Senior attackman Casey Burnett (Windham, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Ben Lassow (Mansfield, Conn.) had the first-quarter tallies to start the game. The Ravens struck for three of the first five goals throughout the first quarter, which left Adelphi trailing by one going into the second quarter, 3-2.
The Panthers wasted no time in the second quarter, scoring just 24 seconds after the opening whistle on a man-up goal by freshman attack Gordon Purdie Jr. Senior attackman Salvador Tuttle took control of the game, as he scored three straight, to push the Panthers out front, 6-3.
Lassow was able to slow down the Adelphi run, as he earned Franklin Pierce's fourth goal of the game. The Panthers were able to manufacture one more goal before the end the first half, pushing the game into halftime with the Adelphi out front, 7-4.
Adelphi took control of the game in the third quarter. The Panthers had a nine-goal binge over the third 15 minutes of play, while the Ravens only managed to put away two goals, from freshman attack Luke Tracy (Pelham, N.H.) and junior attack Anthony D'Aprile (Smithtown, N.Y.). The third left Franklin Pierce on the wrong side of a 10-goal deficit, with Adelphi out front, 16-6.
The Ravens came on strong in the fourth and outscored the Panthers, 5-3. Burnett had a fourth-quarter hat trick, but his four goals on the day were not enough to stop Adelphi, and the Panthers came away with a 19-11 win.
Ravens sophomore goalkeeper Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) faced 28 shots on goal and made 11 saves on the day, but his record fell to 4-4. Panthers senior keeper John McGrath (9-2) took the win by making four saves on 10 shots over the first three quarters.
Leading the Ravens on Saturday was Burnett with four goals, while sophomore Louis Palumbo (Commack, N.Y.), and sophomore defender John Massaro (Newington, Conn.) both collected five ground balls. Franklin Pierce totaled 36 shot attempts and collected 32 ground balls.
Tuttle lead the Panthers with four goals, as they took 46 shots and collected 46 groundballs.
