Ravens Make Early Goal Stand Up in 1-0 Win Over Stonehill
RINDGE, N.H. (Sept. 16, 2000) - Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J.) scored 11 minutes into the match Saturday and the defense for the Franklin Pierce men's soccer team made it stand up as the Ravens beat Stonehill College, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference match.
The win, played out in front of a crowd of 300 people at Crystal Field, was the fourth straight for the Ravens (4-1, 1-0 NE-10) and marked their first-ever conference match. Stonehill drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.
Olius, a junior who was an All-America at Essex (N.J.) Community College in 1999, scored at 10:51 when he took a pinpoint cross passing from junior Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn.) and beat Stonehill goalkeeper Dan Niedringhaus (Norton, Mass.) to the short side.
The Ravens held a decided advantage in shots (22-7) and corner kicks (8-1), but the Chieftains had two great opportunities to score. The first came five minutes into the game when John Pomar (Weymouth, Mass.) beat Franklin Pierce Goalkeeper Rob Scholz (Schenectady, N.Y.) to a sloppy back pass from junior back Wolfgang Koschnitzki (Eschborn, Germany) and broke in alone on goal. His shot was on goal, but Koschnitzki raced back to kick the ball away at the last second.
Stonehill had another chance when Pomar hit the post and the ball bounced across the line. Again, Koschnitzki was there to clear the ball.
The Ravens had two prime chances in the second half, but Paul Lindsay (Edinburgh, Scotland) hit the crossbar with a header and Niedringhaus made a fingertip save on a shot by Olius.
