Franklin Pierce Men's Soccer Team Moves On in NE-10 Tourney

Carpenter, Schwarz Score Twice in 5-3 Win over UMass Lowell

RIDNGE, N.H. (Oct. 31, 2000) - A pair of part-time starters ignited a four-goal first half that carried the Franklin Pierce men's soccer team to a 5-3 win over UMass Lowell in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament.

The third-seeded Ravens (14-4) move on to face second-seeded St. Anselm (14-4) in a semifinal match Saturday at St. Anselm. The game, the second of two semifinals matches being held that day in Manchester, will start at 1:30.

While the Franklin Pierce-St. Anselm match could determine which team advances to the NCAA Division II tournament, sixth-seeded UMass Lowell drops to 10-6-3 and must wait for a possible bid to the ECAC Division II tournament.

Michael Carpenter (Russell, Mass.) and Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn.) paid handsome dividends in last-minute starts. Carpenter scored two goals, while Teague had a pair of assists as the Ravens raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 33 minutes and took a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Carpenter scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute when he banged home a crossing pass to the far post by Teague. Richard Gordon (Glasgow, Scotland) made it 2-0 in the 11th minute when he headed in a cross from Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany) and Carpenter made it 3-0 in the 24th minute when he beat everyone to a loose ball in the 18-yard-box.

Schwarz made it 4-0 in the 33rd minute when he beat UMass Lowell goalkeeper Ben Coy (Holden, Mass.) to a long through pass from Teague, but the River Hawks got one back less than two minutes later on a nice close pass from Angelo Pitsis (Lynn, Mass.) to Michael Paige (Woburn, Mass.).

The teams traded penalty kicks midway through the second half, one by Seif Sidky (Marrakech, Morocco) for UMass Lowell and one by Schwarz for Franklin Pierce, before the River Hawks made it interesting on a goal by Bryan Gorman (Dracut, Mass.) in the 70th minute.

Schwarz now has four goals in two games for the Ravens while Gordon has five in his last three matches.

In the first meeting between Franklin Pierce and St. Anselm this year, the Hawks pinned a 2-0 loss on the Ravens in Manchester.

Playing before Franklin Pierce and Saint Anselm at 11:00 A.M. will be the winners today's games between first-seeded Southern Connecticut St. versus eighth-seeded American Internation, and fifth-seeded New Hampshire College versus Assumption College.
