RINDGE, N.H. (October 3, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was defeated at home on Wednesday afternoon, 6-1, by Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference play.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-7 (2-4 NE10), while Merrimack improves to 7-3 (6-1 NE10).
Merrimack opened the day with wins in all three doubles matches, to lay claim to the doubles point. The most competitive of the three doubles contests came at first doubles. The Franklin Pierce duo of juniors Alana Wyatt (Worcester, Mass.) and Brigid Washburn (Greentown, Pa.) hung right with Merrimack senior Mana Seifaei and freshman Rosemary Campanella up to 5-5, before the latter pair took two straight games to earn a 7-5 victory.
Franklin Pierce's lone point of the day came at second singles, where Franklin Pierce freshman Grayson LaCroix (Cherry Valley, Mass.) notched a 7-6 win in the first set, before Merrimack senior Lauren Persson answered with a 7-5 win in the second set. With the team match already decided, the two played a 10-point tiebreak instead of a third set, with LaCroix picking up the win, 10-4.
Merrimack took wins in each of the other five singles matches, dropping only a combined five games along the way, to create the 6-1 final.
The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they remain home to host Adelphi in an NE10 match at 10 a.m. in Rindge.
