GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (September 8, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was on the road to open its 2019-20 campaign at Adelphi on Sunday afternoon. The host Panthers posted a 5-2 win in the Northeast-10 Conference affair.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens its season at 0-1 (0-1 NE10), while Adelphi improves to 2-0 (2-0 NE10).
Adelphi opened play by taking all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. First and second doubles were both tightly-contested affairs. At first doubles, graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and freshman Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) forced a tiebreak, before Adelphi sophomore Barbie Quagliardi and junior Nicole Kielan pulled out a 7-6 (3) victory. Meanwhile, at second doubles, it was a narrow, 7-5 victory for the Adelphi freshman pair of Amanda Franstedt and Julia Kielan over freshman Laura Alvarez Tello (Vigo, Spain) and senior Sarah Rich (Windham, Maine).
Franklin Pierce's two points on the day both came via three-set singles battles, at second and third singles. At second singles, it was Loria who split a pair of tiebreaks with Nicole Kielan before taking control of the third set and posting a 6-7 (3), 7-6 (0), 6-3 victory. At third singles, Alvarez Tello also rallied back from a first-set defeat to deal Franstedt a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 loss.
The Ravens return to the court on Monday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Nichols for a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m. in Dudley, Mass.
