EASTON, Mass. (June 16, 2019) – Freshman Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) of the Franklin Pierce University women’s track & field team has been named Northeast-10 Conference Field Rookie of the Year for the outdoor season, as announced earlier this week by the Conference office.
The major NE10 awards were voted on by the league’s head coaches. Brena collected Field Rookie of the Year accolades in the indoor season as well.
Brena qualified for the NCAA Championships in the high jump during the outdoor season, as she wrapped up the regular season ranked seventh in the country by clearing 1.74 meters at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational in April. Brena ultimately earned All-America First Team accolades by finishing in a tie for eighth at the NCAA Championships, as she got up and over 1.69 meters.
Among the other highlights for Brena this spring were a second-place finish at the NE10 Championships (1.64m) to earn All-NE10 honors, and a second-place finish at the NEICAAA Championships (1.71m) to earn All-New England plaudits.
It marked the fourth NE10 Rookie of the Year award all-time for the Franklin Pierce cross country/track & field program. In addition to Brena’s selection for the indoor season, Aidan Gilbride was named men’s cross country Rookie of the Year in 2016, while Katie Purves earned Track Rookie of the Year honors for the 2017 outdoor season.
