Women’s Cross Country Heads North of Border, Takes Ninth at Interlock Invitational

MONTREAL (October 12, 2019) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's cross country team faced a stern test on Saturday, but shone well while competing internationally. The women ran an 8k course, which is nearly two miles longer than their typical 3.1-mile run. The women finished ninth out of 14 teams, in a meet which included some of the best teams in Canada.

The first finisher for the Ravens was junior Marissa Farago (Salisbury, Mass.), who tackled the course in 33:02 for a 54th place finish, out of 142 runners. Shortly after was junior Lauren Stankiewicz (Naugatuck, Conn.), who took 80th after a 34:24 finish. Following right behind her was senior Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.), who took 81st with a 35:28 finish.

Next to cross the line was senior Rebecca Zylak (Goffstown, N.H.), who took 93rd for her 35:21 finish. Freshman Nadia Cathcart (Hyde Park, N.Y.) came right behind for her 35:32 finish and a 94th place finish, to round out Franklin Pierce's scoring five on the day.

"We were happy with how the ladies responded to racing such a long distance," said head coach Zach Emerson after the meet. "They each took the challenge head on and showed a level of toughness that we haven't seen yet this season."

Junior Marisa Carbone (Scarborough, Maine) took 111th with her 36:35 finish. Freshman Victoria Van Houten (Wantage, N.J.) finished in 36:41 and 113th place. Coming in 117th was sophomore Alana Thompson (Westampton, N.J.), who ran the course in 37:04. Finally for the Ravens was senior Alena Masterson (Pelham, N.H.), who finished in 39:22 for a 134th-place finish.

The meet was won by Queen's Gaels with 49 points. They were followed by Laval Rouge-et-or in second with 67 points, McGill with 68 points in third, Montreal Carabins in fourth with 89 points, and Uqtr Patriotes with 142 points rounded out the top five. Franklin Pierce's 304 points were good enough for ninth place.

The Ravens will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 27, for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in Syracuse N.Y.
